In Fort Lauderdale, Florida, when paramedics are notified of a
person who has Ebola-type symptoms, they take extreme precautions before
transporting that individual to the hospital. Part of their procedure involves
covering their rescue vehicles, themselves and their patient in plastic. They
use a gigantic plastic tarp to cover the entire inside area of their vehicle. This
type of heightened protection, known as a "patient isolation device,"
has been used on Fort Lauderdale fire rescue vehicles since 1999. These plastic
coverings keep first responders safe. The giant tarp costs about $100, which is
a small price to pay for peace of mind.
